Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy that focuses on the health of your pelvic floor muscles, bladder, bowel, and sexual health. At Scence Physiotherapy, we place a strong emphasis on optimising both your pelvic health and overall well-being throughout your pregnancy and postpartum journey. Our goal is to support you every step of the way, ensuring a healthier and more comfortable pregnancy.

WHAT DOES A PELVIC FLOOR PHYSIO DO?

At your first appointment, our physiotherapists will begin by taking a comprehensive medical history, including specific questions about your bladder, bowel, sexual, and obstetric health. A key component of pelvic floor physiotherapy is assessing the pelvic floor muscles. We will evaluate how well you can engage and relax these muscles, as well as their strength, endurance, and coordination.

There are several methods we use to assess the pelvic floor muscles, but the gold standard is an internal vaginal examination. We will always ensure that you fully understand each assessment option, including its strengths and limitations, so you can make an informed decision about what feels right for you.

Our assessment helps improve your awareness of the pelvic floor muscles, giving you the confidence to know you're performing the exercises correctly. Studies show that up to 60% of women engage their pelvic floor muscles incorrectly. This assessment guides the development of your individualized treatment plan to support your specific needs.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED PELVIC FLOOR PHYSIOTHERAPY?

We recommend that all women see a pelvic floor physiotherapist during pregnancy and the postpartum period. However, it’s never too late to seek help, no matter where you are in your journey.

Signs of pelvic floor dysfunction can include:

  • Urinary incontinence

  • Fecal incontinence

  • Pelvic organ prolapse or a sensation of heaviness in the vagina

  • Pain with sex, tampons, or internal assessments

While these symptoms are common, they should not be accepted as normal. If you're experiencing any of these issues, pelvic floor physiotherapy can help you find relief and improve your pelvic health.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO SEE A PELVIC FLOOR PHYSIOTHERAPIST FOR?

The duration of treatment will vary depending on the individual. Some people may achieve their goals quickly and only need a few appointments, while others may benefit from ongoing sessions over a longer period. Every treatment plan is tailored to meet your specific needs and goals.
